Development of Water Resources in Nigeria, NSE to organise Lecture

On October 4^th 2012, the Federal Capital territory will host engineers across the federation in this year’s October Lecture, to look into the nation’s water challenges and proffer solutions. Eminent personalities will be in attendant which will have the Hon Minister of Federal Capita Territory as the Special Guest of Honour. The theme of this year’s: lecture will be delivered by Engr Kashim A. Ali, FNSE mni, a former president of the Society. The theme is “Development of Water Infrastructure in Nigeria: Challenges and prospects.”

Food and Agriculture Organisation, FAO, earlier this year said that 48 countries, including Nigeria, would face water shortage by 2025. This was revealed in Abuja during the celebration of this year’s World Water Day.

Also, about one third of the people in Africa lived in drought-prone areas. This figure is expected to increase as a result of climate change and desertification. As population increased, the demand for food and water was also growing, noted the FAO country representative during the last Water Day celebration in Abuja.

Nigeria’s population, according to the National Population Commission, has risen from 150 million to 168 million. The implication of this, according to Mr. Setshwaelo, FAO Country representative, is that there will be a further pressure on available water resources in the country. About 70 million Nigerians currently lack access to potable water. Setshwaelo said, “The African Development Report of 2006 clearly acknowledges that water can make great difference to Africa’s development if it is managed well and used wisely.

While government efforts in putting in place appropriate structures and framework to guide the use and management of water resources are worth commendation, the Nigerian Society of Engineers, NSE, under the leadership of Engr Balarabe Shehu Musa,  is dedicating this year October lecture to look into the water challenges in the country.
